Getting a dog or a puppy is a big responsibility. You don’t get a dog or a puppy just because it is cute, whether its purebred or not you should understand that it is a long-term commitment. The first thing you should do is ask these to yourself.

Am I responsible enough to bring home a pet?
Do I have space?
Am I financially ready?

These are just a few questions that require your 100% yeses.

1. The crucial stage – Determine the type of dog that best suit you. Again, do not get a dog based on its appearance. Get a dog that will match your lifestyle.

PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING;

How much space do you have?
What sort of residence do you have?
How much daily exercise can you give to your dog?
The age group of the dog where it will be in.
Age of the youngest child living in the house or regularly visiting the house?
How active are you?
What size of dog do you prefer?
How much is my your budget (weekly or monthly) to feed your dog?
How much grooming would your dog get in a week?
Do I want a dog that will protect my property?
Have you owned a dog before?

It is very important to do some research about the breed before getting one.

2. After identifying the breed that best suits you and your budget. It is now time to decide where to get the puppy. Do not be so lazy, always do some research find a responsible and ethical breeder. There are plenty of backyard breeders who practice unethical breeding just to make extra money so beware of them. Poor breeding such as inbreeding (breeding of two dogs who are closely related). Puppies produced by inbreeding are most likely to inherit or could pass on genetic disorders such as blindness, heart murmur, and other deformities.

3. Visit the Kennel personally. Responsible breeders will not hesitate to show you around their place and will allow you to ask questions that you can think of. Check where the puppy sleeps, plays and eats and how he interacts with its own family and with people. Check the puppy’s mom/dad (aside from the PCCI certificate that they will provide), it will give you a peace of mind or assurance that the puppy that you are getting is really purebred. Also, It’s good to see how the parents behave as temperament can be inherited.

4. How old is the puppy? Puppies should be at least 8 weeks old to leave their mother. However, I would recommend that you should get an older one probably at least 4 months old (personal opinion) as they have the stronger immune system.

5. Is the puppy weaned? At 7 weeks puppies should be fully weaned, if not, it means puppies are younger than what the breeder claimed.

6. Are both parents still under the bracket of the age group where they are allowed to be bred? If yes, then good.

7. Make sure that the puppy has completed/got all the required vaccines and deworming upon release. Make sure to get the copy of its medical records for your guidance. Also, carefully check the puppy if it looks healthy, checks the eyes, nose, ears, under the coat etc. Runny noses, sneezing, runny eyes, and lethargy are not normal.

8. Know the diet of the puppy. A responsible breeder will brief you on proper feeding and will give you enough food to continue on the same diet for few days.

9. Bring the puppy to the vet within 48 hours for a checkup to make sure that the puppy is really healthy.

Love them, as they will give you nothing but unconditional love.
