TIPS FOR BUYING A PUPPY (PUREBRED PUPPY)

Tips for buying a puppy

Getting a dog or a puppy is a big responsibility. You don’t get a dog or a puppy just because you find them cute! Whether it is purebred or not, you must understand that it is a long-term commitment. The first thing you must do is ask these to yourself.

Do I have the time?
Am I responsible enough to bring home a pet?
Do I have space?
Am I financially ready?

These are just a few questions that require your 100% yeses.

1. The crucial stage – Determine the type of dog that suits you best. Again, do not get a dog based on its appearance. Get a dog that matches your lifestyle and personality.

PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING;

How much space do you have?
What sort of residence do you have?
How much daily exercise can you give to your dog?
What is the age group of the people where the dog will be living in?
What is the age of the youngest child living in the house or regularly visiting the house?
How active are you?
What size of dog do you prefer?
How much is your budget (weekly or monthly) to feed your dog?
How much grooming would your dog get in a month?
Do I want a dog that will protect my property?
Have you owned a dog before?
It is very important to do some research on the breed before getting one.

2. After you have identified the breed that suits you most, it is now time to decide where to get a puppy. Do not be so lazy, always do some research and look for a responsible and ethical breeder. Beware of dog breeders who are practicing unethical breeding for money! Poor breeding such as inbreeding (breeding of two closely related dogs). Puppies produced though inbreeding are most likely to inherit or could pass on genetic disorders such as blindness, heart murmur, and other deformities.

3. Visit the Kennel personally. A responsible breeder never hesitates to show their place and allows you to ask questions. Check where the puppy sleeps, plays, eats, and how he interacts with its own family and people around it. Check the puppy’s mom/dad (beside PCCI certificate); this will somehow give you peace of mind or assurance that the puppy is purebred. Also, It’s good to see how the parents behave as temperament is inherited.

4. How old is the puppy? Puppies should be (at least) 8 weeks old before they leave the mother. However, I recommend getting an older one or at least 4 months old pup as they have a stronger immune system.

5. Is the puppy weaned? Weaning begins between three and four weeks of age and is ideally completed by about seven to eight weeks of age. If the puppy is not yet fully weaned, it means puppies are younger than what the breeder claims.

6. Were the parents still in the ideal age bracket when the puppy was born? If yes, then good.

7. Make sure that the puppy has completed or has gotten all the required vaccines and deworming upon release. Make sure to get a copy of its medical records for your guidance. Also, carefully check the puppy if it looks healthy, checks its eyes, nose, ears under the coat, and more. Runny nose, sneezing, runny eyes, and lethargy characteristics are not typical.

8. Know the diet of the puppy. A responsible breeder guides you on proper feeding techniques and provides enough food to continue on the same diet for a few days.

9. Bring the puppy to the vet within 48 hours for a quick checkup to make sure that the puppy is healthy.

Love them, as they will give you nothing but unconditional love.
