RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS FOR KIDS WITH ATOPIC DERMATITIS:
ATOPIC DERMATITIS IN INFANT
My daughter has this type of skin condition; it first came out when she was just a month old. Her scalp and eyebrows were very scaly, and there were pink patches or rashes (scaly as well) all over her face and in some parts of her body. We took her to a pedia-derma in Makati Medical Center, the dermatologist said that it was Seborrhoeic Dermatitis in Babies (Cradle Cap) a very common and mild form of eczema that usually disappears on its own before the baby reaches its first birthday, but in my daughter’s case, it did not, and in fact turned out to be Atopic Dermatitis.
The good news is, this skin condition is not permanent, and kids will outgrow it, or it will be less severe as they get old. Kids who have “atopic dermatitis” are susceptible to many irritants, their skin can be very itchy, and scratching is sometimes very hard to resist which is more intense when their skin is dry.
Very hot or cold weather; exposure to harsh soaps (body soaps or detergents use in clothes); scratchy fabrics such as jeans and more, can trigger this condition.
The dermatologist advised us to apply hydrocortisone ointment for 5 to 7 days only. You can immediately see the improvement after applying a very thin cream on the skin (this ointment has a steroid, consult your doctor before using it for It CAN cause skin thinning.
ATOPIC DERMATITIS PREVENTION NOTES:
-Keep your baby cool and sweat free all the time.
-Use light weight or soft clothes (avoid scratchy fabrics)
-Use a mild detergent soap when washing baby’s clothes (I used “perla” white : recommended by pediatrician).
-Use mild body soap such as cethaphil, oilatum or dove extra sensitive (dove extra sensitive is good and a lot cheaper).
-Keep their fingernails short.
-Moisturize their skin by applying a very mild lotion (as much as possible 3 times a day). Physiogel lotion is very good. It is also one of the recommended products for kids with atopic dermatitis.
There are certain food that triggers this skin condition that’s why it is very important to consult with your pediatrician (dermatologist) so you are properly guided.
