The Feast of the Black Nazarene brings hopes and dreams to millions of Filipino devotees, people from different parts of the country come and gather to Quiapo Manila just to witness and celebrate this important catholic feast, to some, a glimpse to the Miraculous Black Nazarene is more than enough to make their long journey worthwhile.

The Black Nazarene Statue came to the Philippines from Acapulco Mexico in 1600s. The dark color (skin) of the statue was due the fire happened in the ship during the voyage. The present day statue found in Quipo church is composed of the original head with a replica body. The replica body was sculpted by a Filipino Santero Gener Manlaqui. The other statue with the original body and replica head (replica head was sculpted by the same santero) is preserved in different location for security concerns.

A procession is being held in honor of the Black Nazarene during the feast, the image of the Black Nazarebe is placed on carriage and pulled by devotees from Intramuros to Quiapo Chruch where it has been homed since 1787.

The statue is said to have survived number of disasters even during World War II. Many Filipino devotees are continuously attending the feast as a sign of their gratitude for the miracles granted unto them by the Black Nazarene while some hopes to receive miracles.

    There will be no classes in Manila on Friday, the Feast of the Black Nazarene, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada decreed Monday.

    In Executive Order No. 1 for 2015, Estrada said the suspension will cover public and private schools at all levels.

    “Classes for all levels in universities, colleges and schools in the City of Manila (are) suspended 09 January 2015, Friday,” Estrada said in his order, which was posted on his Facebook account.
